Freedom| Freestyle Writing Challenge

Thank you so much Amanda, for nominating me!
Go check her out - her blog is *insert shades emoji*

When I read the rules, I knew I had to do this, it's such an awesome idea!

1. Open an MS Word / Google docs document.
2. Set a stop watch or your mobile to 5 minutes or 10 minutes whichever challenge you think you can beat.
3. Your topic is at the foot of this post BUT DO NOT SCROLL DOWN TO SEE IT UNTIL YOU ARE READY WITH A TIMER.
4. Fill the word doc with as many words as you can in the time limit. Once you begin writing do not stop even to turn.
5. Do not cheat by going back and correcting spellings and grammar with spell check in MS WORD (it is only meant for you to reflect on your own control of sensible thought flow and for you to reflect on your ability to write the right spelling and stick to grammar rules)
6. You may or may not pay attention to punctuation and CAPITALS. However if you do, it would be best.
7. At the end of your post write down ‘No. Of words =_____’ so that we would have an idea of how much you can write within the time frame.
8. Do not forget to copy & paste the entire passage on your blog post with a new Topic for your nominees and copy & paste these rules with your nominations.

I was assigned the topic 'Freedom' and went for the ten minute challenge.
This is what I wrote...

' Freedom. I cant remember a time when this word was not in the back of my mind. Though, to be fair, It was more a feeling than an exact word. Whenever I thought of what I wanted to be when I was older - a hairdresser, an artist, a professor at a university - with the (ever changing) job title, always came the feeling. That feeling was really all I wanted.

When I think of freedom, first and foremost I think of birds. Flying high above the rest of us, soaring and swooping as they wish. They sing at sunrise and sunset. Go about collecting food. They can go wherever they want, like how many fly south for the winter. And I don’t think they think about any of it either, I reckon one day they wake up like, ‘hey, it’s gotten really chilly, I think we should fly south now’ and then they all go. Just like that, no planning, no debating, no ifs and buts, they just trust their instincts and go. Like all animals I suppose. When did we become so separated to this?

I feel a lot of us have forgotten to trust our instincts. A lot of us look around us for answers instead of looking within and trusting that we already know them, that we already know the ‘right’ thing to do.

So to me, ‘freedom’ is a sense of being.

Of being your true self, feeling happy with yourself, and letting yourself be. It is acknowledging the fact that you can do anything you want and nothing can stop you unless you let it. It’s trusting your instincts, letting yourself be yourself and doing as you feel because you know you can never go wrong, that everything happens for a reason.
It’s the feeling you get when you're walking barefoot along a beach, a slight but gratefully accepted breeze whipping at your hair, as you listen the sound of the ocean lapping at your feet. You’ve forgotten any concept of time, you are completely there, present, in the perfect moment. You have a stupid grin on your face because of all the above and a mind full of infinite possibilities. Freedom is letting yourself feel that feeling, knowing it all to be true all the time, wherever you are. And if you ever forget it, it’s knowing that only you, can take yourself back again. I suppose it’s like accepting that only you have control over your life, through the feelings and perspectives you choose, then - '

Number of words: 424

It was so much fun doing this! The time went a lot more quickly than I thought it would - I got cut off at the end! But I'm still very happy with what I managed to write, once you start, you really get in the zone!

Here are my lovely nominees (even if you aren't nominated, I definitely still recommend giving it a go);

I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

  2. Absolutely beautiful piece, Vanisha :) I felt so wistful reading this, I wanted to fly. And you're SO right that freedom is a sense of being, of being true to ourselves, and letting ourselves just BE!! Haha, and I know what you mean, the time just seemed to slip by when I started this, too, and suddenly 10 minutes was up and it was back to reality :) I'm really glad you enjoyed the challenge x
